Years ago I badly sprained my thumb. Could this explain the arthritis that showed up on my thumb X-ray?

When the ligaments around a joint are damaged by a sprain, it can change the way the joint moves and may increase the forces on the articular cartilage surfaces. This is similar to any mechanical device or machinery. If the mechanism is out of balance, it tends to wear out faster. A bad thumb sprain early in life can help explain why your X-ray shows arthritis in your thumb joint.
