What is a tendinopathy?

Tendinopathy is non traumatic injury to a tendon anywhere along it’s course. This is usually caused by overuse, degenerative changes, or inflammatory pathology such as rheumatoid arthritis and gout, or systemic disorders such as diabetes mellitus or thyroid disease which can result in adhesions or thickening of the tendon. In an article by Adams et all they discuss many of the common and uncommon tendinopathies that occur in the hand and wrist. Many of these are labeled as tenosynovitis or tendinosis, which are types of tendinopathies. Tenosynovitis is when the issue is located in the synovial sheath of the tendon. Tendinosis is when there are chronic degenerative changes to the tendon often with the absence of inflammatory cells in the area.
