I've heard there's a link between smoking and depression. Does smoking cause depression or vice versa?

Studies over the years have linked tobacco to many problems. Anxiety, depression, and panic disorders are some of the psychologic problems smokers report. But when the number of these problems in nonsmokers increased, scientists started rethinking and retesting their theories.

New studies suggest a genetic trait puts the person at risk for both. It's not clear yet where the cause and effect occurs, but studies are underway in this area.
