I see in the news more athletes have been found using steroids. Are athletes ever asked years later if they used these illegal drugs?

Good question, and one that many people would probably like to know the answer to. It's difficult to assess this kind of information for obvious answers. Even retired athletes must protect their names.

When researchers ask this question anonymously of current or former athletes, many don't answer the question. In a recent study of 159 former elite track and field players from Germany, 32 admitted using steroids. Forty-five athletes said they had never used steroids. The rest (82 athletes) didn't answer the question.

The data collected was never used in the study in order to protect personal data. Perhaps with the current media attention to this problem, there will be future studies to help bring the full measure of the problem to light.
