Could you settle an argument I'm having with my wife? I think people with arthritis are more likely to stick with an exercise program if they are younger. She thinks it's the older folks like us who know the value of exercise and stay committed. Who's right?

More and more studies show exercise is the best way to first prevent and then treat many diseases and illnesses. Arthritis is no exception. But getting folks to exercise and keeping them from dropping out is a big topic these days.

A recent study from the Arthritis Research Institute showed that age, weight, and gender aren't the real factors in exercise participation and retention. Severity of symptoms is a more likely reason for folks of any age to drop out of an exercise program.

Dropout rate is also affected by level of education and overall health. Adults with more education in good health are more likely to exercise on a regular basis. Exercising with a group or at an exercise center also helps people stay committed and focused.
