I am a sixty-year-old man and have had some nagging shoulder pain for awhile now. I recently got an MRI and I have a supraspinatus tear. I can move my arm as much as I want but it just hurts afterwards. The doc wants to repair it but I’m not excited about elective surgery. Is there another way or am I doomed to have surgery to get rid of this pain?

There is recent research that indicates if you are over 55 years old, have an isolated supraspinatus tear and still have full range of motion, it is best to take the most conservative treatment route of physical therapy alone. Patients who underwent rotator cuff surgery fared no better after two years time than those who solely did physical therapy.
