I have worked my tail off in rehab but I'm still missing the last five-degrees of knee extension after ACL surgery. The therapist wants me to keep at it until I get closer to the motion in the other knee. Does five degrees really make that much difference?

A recent study of the long-term results after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) show that even a loss of three to five degrees of knee extension can make a big difference. That loss alters the biomechanics of the joint. Uneven wear and tear can lead to arthritic changes in the knee. This effect is more pronounced when the meniscus or articular (joint) cartilage is damaged. The experts agree that patients who want the best long-term results should persist with their efforts to gain full motion, strength, and stability. It may take a little extra time and effort but the end results will be worth it.
