What is the importance of the tensor fascia latte muscle and hip surgery?

The tensor fascia latte is a muscle that acts to help flex the thigh and control the leg and pelvis during walking. In an anterior approach for hip replacement this muscle is used as a land mark for location of the incision. It may also be effected by procedures during this surgery, especially as it is commonly pulled out to the side with clamps to allow access to the hip joint. In a recent study by Grab et al, these authors suggest that carefully considering the anatomy of this muscle and the nerve which controls it is important for decreasing the risk of injury to this nerve and subsequently the muscle during the anterior approach to the hip.
