I am 60 years old and rely on walking to keep my health. I recently broke my heel bone and my doctor says that I need surgery to repair it. Is this the same as an ankle fusion? Will I be able to walk after this?

While these are good questions for your surgeon, a typical heel fracture repair, or calcaneal fracture, involves screws and plates into the heel bone itself.  After surgery you can expect to not be allow to put weight through it for at least six weeks, followed by physical therapy to get back to walking properly.  Your ankle joint will be stiff, but not fused, and with the proper care you will be able to return to walking without issues.
